Just a few minutes ago, I had the fun of interviewing our freshman daughter, Felicia (right) and Abby get ready for the snipping to begin.Abby, about her hair cutting adventures. Somehow I seemed to block out an incident from the past that launched Abby in this direction.

When I asked her how she got the idea of cutting hair even though she didn't have any formal training she said,

“Mom, when I was 8 you were cutting my hair and talking on the phone at the same time. You snipped my ear. It was then that I determined you wouldn't be cutting my hair again. I began to trim my own.
Then in the 8th grade, my Girl Scout friends and I got to go to Hawaii. Two of them wanted me to cut their hair. It was fun to do and I enjoyed it. I had thought about going to cosmetology school but knew I probably wouldn't — but, hey, people need haircuts. I enjoy it because I am doing them a service and they feel better. I love working with my hands.”
Over the Christmas break, Abby was happy to cut her friend Ryan's hair. He appears to have enjoyed his session with Abby.So far Abby has cut 60 different peoples' hair. She has 6 regular guy customers every 2 months and cuts about 4–5 peoples' hair a week. When I asked her what was one of the craziest hairdos she had ever done she replied, “I cut the hair of a student with long thick black hair, really short, and spiked it up. Then I just randomly chopped it. When her friend saw it she wanted me to cut hers just the same.”

Abby trims Felicia's hair, skillfully avoiding the ear.Does Abby charge for her cuts? She says that she doesn't feel comfortable charging. She still wants to get better and when she gets a business card, she'll probably post a price. For now she is content with her “tips” such as coffee, ice cream, Chex mix, back massage and sometimes money. The college kids come to her because she is free and they just have to walk over to her dorm and sign up on the whiteboard outside her room.

Happy snipping, Abby!
